Cachicata Trek to Macchu Picchu 4Days/3Night

Activity Level : Moderate -

Overview

Cachicata is a small farming community located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The inhabitants of this ancient village dedicate themselves to growing beans, potatoes, barley, potatoes, and corn.

Near Cachicata village is the famous Chachicata quarry, from where pink granite stones were extracted to build the famous fortress of Ollantaytambo. During our trek, we walk to Intiwatana archaeological place, and from there we enjoy the wonderful views of the mountain range and the famous Inka God Veronica (snow-capped pick).

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Huarocondo – Socma – Perolniyoc

We pick you up in your hotel and then travel by private bus to the community of Huarocondo where we visit a beautiful colonial church. Then, we ascend to the community of Socma from where we start our trek up to the archaeological site of Perolniyoc. It is located above a waterfall, and from there we climb up to the small community of the same name, where we camp for the night.

Day 2: Perolniyoc – Inca Canal

In the morning we start to climb up to the first pass at 4,500 meters/14,764 feet above sea level. Then we descend again to the Mama Cona lagoon. We walk through another beautiful mountain pass where there is an ancient Incan canal that still transports water to the Cachicata quarry. The canal is 17 km/10.5 miles long and is considered one of the most important engineering achievements in the region. We will also be able to admire the Urubamba and Vilcabamba mountain ranges.

Day 3: Inca Canyon – Cachicata – Aguas Calientes

We start our trek following a little creek which will take us to the Inca Canyon. Then, we hike to Intiwatana archaeological complex. In this place, we enjoy a spectacular view of the Sacred Valley and Urubamba River.

Continuing our trek, we make our way to the Inca quarry of Cachicata. There, we can see how the Incas cut, carved, and transported the huge stones that were used to build the archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo. Descending into the Sacred Valley, we admire the Inca cemetery and what was once the town for the Incan quarry workers. Have lunch in the Cachicata community, then continue by car to Ollantaytambo, where we take the train to Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Machupicchu – Aguas Calientes – Cusco

Early in the morning we take the bus up to the sanctuary city of Machupicchu and enjoy a guided tour. In the afternoon, we take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes and board our train back to Cusco.
