Rainbow Mountain & Paccoyo Tour – 1 Day

Overview
We leave the city of Cusco early in the morning and after 3 hours on our way we enter the community of Palccoyo. Here we can appreciate a completely reddish mountainous landscape, with varied crops and alpacas in the distance. We will visit a family in this community where a pre-Inca museum is preserved. Here we can see utensils for growing potatoes, alpaca wool extraction tools, and kitchen utensils from that time.
We continue our trip, then we will get to know the fauna of the region such as alpacas and llamas. In the opportunity that we have, we stop to take photos with these incredible animals of the region. Upon arrival, we stop right at the base of the mountain of colors, where we can appreciate a view of the reddish valley and prepare for the ascent to the mountain.
We begin our ascent on an established path and we ascend for 1 hour and 20 minutes up to 200 meters higher, up to the so-called “Stone Forest”. Before reaching the stone forest, we will see the first and second mountain of colors in front of us. During our hike, we will see from a higher perspective the red valley, the full extension of the colored mountains, and this incredible landscape.
Itinerary
Our bright and early pickup begins at your hotel (any hotel) in Cusco at approximately 5:00 a.m.
The bus takes the southern route from Cusco for 3 hours passing through many colorful colonial cities before reaching the district of Pitumarca, where it is time to have breakfast and get energy for the walk ahead.
Back on our bus, we traveled for 1 hour and traversed more hours along the Salcca Valley. Little by little, passing through these hidden landscapes of traditional life within the Rainbow Mountain region, red valleys, incredible rock formations, mountain terraces, herds of alpacas and llamas complement our sacred journey.
From the trailhead (4850m / 15912ft), we ascend for 45 minutes to 1 hour (1km) to our viewpoint (5,000m / 16,404ft). Here are the most unique views of AUSANGATE (Cusco’s highest snowy mountain at 6375m / 20915ft) and the three Rainbow Mountains that intersect with each other displaying their unique color formations exposing their inner history for us to see. How fortunate we are to be out of the crowds in our own space to observe this treasured and personal experience. Take the time to explore the area and relax.
